I Need a Tattoo

I Need a Tattoo

Do you think I should get a tattoo?

If you’ve ever met me, go ahead and pick your chin up off of the floor now…

I’m just not the tattoo sort of girl, you might say.  My attitude has changed somewhat, but I’m not quite there yet.  And, the older I get, the less likely I am to really follow through on that whim.

Did you know God has tattoos?

Yep, the “Old Testament” kind.  He has my name inscribed on Him!

“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;” – Isaiah 49:16 (NIV)

Let me tell you something about me:

I have visions.  I would never say they’re prophetic, but I call them my “visuals” from God.  (I think that if I claimed them to be more than they are, I’d be in big trouble!)

What I see are usually quick glances of something or someone.  There’s no predicting when they’ll “appear,” and in no way are they by my choice.  Sometimes they are a warning, and sometimes they are full of joy and encouragement.  I’m learning to take them more seriously as I believe they have significance in my life.  I’ve come to peace with their occurrences, or I wouldn’t be sharing.

Here’s my favorite, and thus the thought of a tattoo.

In my quiet times with God I often picture myself as a little girl sitting on the lap of The King.  I know it stems from the story of the little princess God gave me for my children’s book, Good Morning, Daddy!”  The mere idea of me being His daughter makes me happy.  It makes me feel cherished, important, and protected.

One morning a few months ago, I saw myself sitting on God’s lap having a conversation.  I saw me, but from the perspective of the princess.  I was looking down at myself sitting on His left leg.  I reached out and took His left hand.  That was the end of the vision, but what I remember was that I had taken His hand for a reason:

I wanted to see my name written there.

I knew it was!

Wow; what a feeling of love!  I was overwhelmed with joy!  I could FEEL the assurance of His affection and the permanence of our relationship.

I am His forever!  Just as the verse states, He did the engraving.  It was His choice.  The passage is the record of God speaking through Isaiah to the nation of Israel, but I know that it is also for me personally.  It’s for each of you, as well.

On with the story…

I was so impressed that I knew there had to be a passage in Scripture…somewhere…that spoke of God having my name on His hand.  I looked.  I searched various resources on the internet.  Nope; nothing about my name being written on His hand.

I inquired of some friends, but they had no knowledge of such a reference.  I was sad, but I held on to the feeling as I know God’s love is true.

One Sunday morning during our church’s worship time, I heard it; we were singing, “Before the Throne of God Above.”  One verse states, “My name is graven on His hands; my name is written on His heart.”

Graven!

I hadn’t searched for the word graven, and when I did, I was led to right to Isaiah 49:16.

Hallelujah; happy girl!

Daughters and sisters, this is for you, too.  On those days when you begin to wonder if you have any purpose or value, remember the following truths:

“Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” – Luke 12:7 (NIV)

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” – Matthew 6:26 (NIV)

“How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.  They cannot be numbered! – Psalm 139:17 (NLT)

Each of us is so important to God that He has inscribed our names on His palms.  That’s the best tattoo ever!

GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME!
